Despite the financial setback suffered by US which jolted the entire world economy in 2008, it remains the top destination for international students to pursue higher studies. According to a survey conducted by the Institute of International Education, 62% of the foreign students are Asian. The popularity has increased as never before in the past, even though the education cost has become a question mark for many international students.
Some popular US universities are listed below –
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Brigham young University
Harvard University
Yale University
University of Chicago
Princeton University
California Institute of Technology
Columbia University
University of Pennsylvania

Northwestern University
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Brown University
New York University
Boston University
Recent report suggests that around 7 lakh+ foreign students were studying in the year 2011-2012 which is 5.7% increase from the previous year. California remains one of the top favorite destinations, drawing lakhs of students every year. As per statistics, there are around 4000 odd degree-granting institutions in America but students prefer to join the highest quality universities that are recognized worldwide. Hence university rankings influence the student’s decision to apply for the best-ranked colleges or universities provided they match up the eligibility criteria. The top 10 universities of US with the highest enrollments are as follows -
University of Southern California
University of Illinois ,
New York University
Purdue University
Columbia University
UCLA ,Northeastern University ,
University of Michigan
Michigan State University
Ohio State University .
Most of these universities offer wide variety of graduate and postgraduate courses in different subjects and different universities are known for their specialized courses. For instance one of the student Ankit Sharma pursuing a post graduate course in Computer Science from a renowned university mentions, ‘’Although Europe offers specialized courses in computer science but US is far more advanced since they keep updating their syllabus and superior in terms of new discoveries in this field.’’ Similarly Raman enrolled with Georgia Tech believes that only reason which prompted him to study was the newest and advanced technology as course offering of this particular university. There are many colleges which offer scholarships for foreign students but have to undergo competitive exams which are really tough to crack.
However, high ratings of a university do not mean it is fit for every individual. Rankings may help in you considering the options available but there are several factors which need to be taken into account before you finalize. So choose the right one based on your academic interest, future job opportunities to excel in your academic as well as your professional life.
